General: Post Indicator Valve (PIV)
The PIV is basically a long handle used as an operator on an underground valve. The post indicator provides a visual aid to determine if valve is open or closed.
How to Inventory:
- Recommendation, for sake of consistency, is to look at it when we do our walk around the building, if there is a problem, write a work ticket and then move on.
- Possibly inventory as part of infrastructure?
- If the PIV “serves” building and is in close proximity then it should be inventoried as part of building.
How to establish Condition:
- Visual inspection for damage or anything that might obscure vision, make sure handle is locked, any water leakage, overgrown bushes, etc.
- As far as the underground valve there is no realistic way to do a visual inspection.
- Normally, PIV are on a periodic inspection program where the valve is exercised on a yearly basis.
- Recommend creating a corrective maintenance work order if any deficiency.
Applicable BSC and Assemblies:
- If a deficiency is found they are usually replaced and not deferred.
